Sherbro Island City, Sierra Leone

Sherbro Island City is an ambitious project on Sherbro Island, off Sierra Leone’s southwestern coast, aiming to transform the area into a sustainable urban hub. The island, covering 600 square kilometers, is home to the Sherbro people and boasts a rich cultural heritage. Spearheaded by Sherbro Alliance Partners (SAP), which was co-founded by Idris Elba and Siaka Stevens, the project seeks to establish the world’s first Afro-dynamic eco-city, blending African cultural values with modern sustainability goals, positioning itself as a model of eco-friendly urban development. This new city will stimulate growth by attracting investments through its Special Economic Zone (SEZ), focusing on sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and green energy with wind turbines and solar farms powering the island, to address the lack of mains electricity.

Sherbro Island City envisions a sustainable future for Sierra Leone, blending eco-friendly initiatives with African cultural heritage, promoting eco-tourism, and preserving the island’s biodiversity while benefiting local communities. Although still in its early stages, with feasibility studies underway, it offers a transformative approach to urban development that respects both people and the environment.
